Understanding What Happens Between EMDR Sessions
Now that we have begun processing your target memory, the work doesn't stop when the session ends.
One of the unique aspects of EMDR is that processing often continues between sessions without you having to deliberately do anything. During this time, your brain continues to organise, integrate, and make sense of the information we have begun processing.
You do not need to analyse, search for memories, or try to make anything happen. Instead, I invite you to simply notice any changes that occur and make a note of them so we can discuss them together in our next session.
Sometimes changes are obvious. Sometimes they are subtle. Sometimes you may notice very little at all. All of these experiences are completely normal.
The purpose of this reflection is simply to help you become curious about any shifts that may be taking place.

Changes in Your Body

Differences in tension, sleep, energy levels, pain, or restlessness?
Does your body respond differently when thinking about the memory or issue?
Changes in Triggers
Have situations, people, places, thoughts, or memories affected you differently?
Are you reacting in a way that surprises you?
Have any triggers become easier to manage?
A Final Reminder
Changes in the issue we are working on
Have you noticed any changes in how you respond to the problem or memory we are processing?
Are there situations that feel more manageable?
Are there triggers that feel stronger or weaker than before?
Changes in Emotions
Have your emotional reactions changed in any way?
Are there emotions that feel more or less intense?
Have you noticed any new emotional responses?
Changes in Behaviour
Have you been doing anything differently?
Have you noticed changes in avoidance, confidence, boundaries, or daily routines?
Are there things you have felt more able to do?
There is no right or wrong answer to any of these questions.
Processing doesn't always happen in a straight line. Some weeks you may notice significant changes, while at other times the shifts may be much smaller. Both are part of the process.
The most helpful attitude to bring is one of curiosity rather than judgement.
You are not looking for evidence that therapy is working. You are simply noticing what your mind and body are doing as they continue to process and heal.
🌿 Be curious. Be observant. Be kind to yourself.
